Interview with our Mural Artist, Don Stephens

In a few sentences, tell us a little about yourself.

“Name is Don Stephens and I’ve been in the Philadelphia area since graduating from the High School of Art & Design (class of ‘87.) To add, I resided in Willingboro, New Jersey, did a tour in the United States Marine Core Reserves, then graduated from Temple University Tyler School of Art (class of ‘95.) Since that point in time until now, I have focused on connectivity and persistence within this creative journey of mine.”

When and how did you become interested in art?

“WOW, great question! This affinity for the arts happened in the 70’s watching Snoopy on the 19 inch black & white TV. Just had a Saturday moment when the “Peanuts Special” came on, I grabbed some paper and a pencil and lost it. I showed my mother, made her get off the phone, and I’VE BEEN TURNED OUT EVER SINCE.”

What was your process in imagining and creating our cafe mural?

“Well, I was on a mission to find some quinoa and better ramen. I was on the Rt 5 bus, jumped off, went in, bumped into Mike and the crew, got to talking. Mike made mention of the mural then went to check out my Instagram. Two days later, I came in with my concept being the basis of a tree-a CARROT TREE. So, the combination of conversation, an open ear, and freedom to create, brought to earth and to the walls of KCFC, the first CARROT TREE.”

What roles do you believe artists have in our community/society?

“To me, we are the glue for everything in our existence. Had and will always pass through the finger tips of what we, socially, call AN ARTIST.”

What other projects are you currently working on?

“I continue to work with the elder community of Philadelphia. I also do extensive work with the youth of the Philadelphia region. Creative work within the area is always open to CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES. Let’s KEEP CREATING.”

In addition to the mural, Don is currently our artist of the month for September. Come check out more of his work hanging in the cafe while you grab beer or wine to-go!
