Quarantine Collages

A Side Yard Sunday Project initiated by Amy Bond

In the midst of Governor Wolf’s stay-at-home order in April 2020, Amy Bond, a local artist and resident of Fishtown, devised a creative way to connect neighbors despite our newly-imposed isolation…through collage art! After dropping off two art boards at each of six neighbors’ homes, Amy sent a group text with the invitation to add something to them and then pass along to the next neighbor.

“And so, from our respective homes, distracting ourselves from the fears and unknowns of COVID-19, we cut, we pasted, we sewed, we drew, we colored, or otherwise added something to the boards and then passed them along. For seventeen months we added and passed, added and passed, moving the boards in a clockwise rotation.” Amy passed to Erin Murphy, Erin passed to Judy Murphy, Judy passed to Suzanne Hughs, Suzanne passed to Holly Logan, Holly passed to Tricia Way, Tricia passed back to Amy, and so on.

“We worked until they seemed finished…and then added more blank boards into the rotation.”  Amy added another neighbor, David Bankes, and they had their own rotation, passing their collaborative collages back and forth, back and forth, until finished. “In the end, we collectively produced over 50 mixed media (sometimes multi-dimensional) collages, some of which are presented here at the cafe in The Kensington Community Food Co-op.”

All work is mixed media, 8x10 inches, on archival board, framed.
Suggested donation is $25 each. Donations will benefit Portside Arts Center in Philadelphia.
